Become a Striving Readers Mentor
Do you love helping students succeed? You can help our young students improve their reading skills by being a Striving Reader mentor. You will play a very important role as a mentor by leading your assigned student through provided structured activities each session. You will also be supported by a program coordinator that will provide training, support you while onsite and gather feedback on how your student did in the session.
This program is based on research from the Annenburg Institute at Brown University that has outlined critical success factors for high-dosage tutoring and mentoring programs. Our mentors play a critical role in the success of our students and the program as they build a relationship with their student and encourage them in their reading. We are seeking people that can commit to 1 or 2 30-minute sessions a week (see schedule below). Of course, we realize that you might need to miss a week or two, but ask you to make this commitment a priority as consistency is critical.
Mentoring will target 1st and 2nd grade students to boost struggling readers' skills prior to hitting third grade where academics is heavily targeted and students need to begin reading to learn instead of learning to read. We will need many volunteers as we hope to impact as many students as possible. No experience is necessary as we provide everything you need for the activities, training and onsite support so you have everything you need to be successful!
