What We Do

Literacy

Why Literacy Matters

Reading is the foundation for success in school and in life.

Yet access to books is not equal. Research shows that having as few as 20 books in the home can significantly impact a child’s academic success even more than a parent’s education level or income.

That’s why CCEF is committed to putting books directly into the hands of students—helping them build confidence, skills, and a lifelong love of reading.

How We Build Strong Readers

Through Book-a-Palooza, students choose books that reflect their interests to build home libraries and create excitement around reading.

For many students, it’s the first time they’ve chosen a book of their own. When students have books they enjoy, they are more likely to read beyond the classroom—strengthening skills, confidence, and a lifelong love of reading.

The Impact of Literacy

When students have access to books they enjoy, the impact extends far beyond reading—it shapes confidence, learning, and future success.

  • Stronger reading skills and comprehension
  • Increased confidence and motivation to learn
  • Improved vocabulary, writing, and communication skills
  • Greater engagement in school and independent learning
  • Development of empathy, creativity, and critical thinking

These are the skills that help students succeed in school today and prepare them for the opportunities of tomorrow.

Research shows that reading for just 6 minutes can reduce stress by up to 61%, highlighting the powerful role reading plays not only in learning, but in overall well-being.
