Where are you from? Where did you study?
I'm originally from WI but moved to a warmer climate after college graduation. I received my undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice from the University of WI - Eau Claire, with one semester spent studying in Copenhagen, Denmark. I've also lived in Houston, The Netherlands, Ohio, Massachusetts, and North Carolina.I earned my Master degree from East Carolina University.
Have you always wanted to teach?
Yes, but in the 1980's I was discouraged from entering the teaching field because there were so few jobs available so I became a police officer. But after 7 years of law enforcement, I went back to school to become a teacher.
Who were you most influenced by and why?
I was definitely influenced by my first and second grade teachers (Mrs. Fowler & Miss Grant). They strongly encouraged my love of reading and introduced me to book series. I still have the book Mrs. Fowler gave me for reading over 100 books in first grade.
What do you consider your biggest success as a teacher?
My biggest success as a teacher is having students come to the library and ask for books that they can take home and keep. I enjoy talking to them about books and love when they tell me of books they think I should order for the library.
What do you like best about Coltrane Webb STEM?
I love the small size of CWE. I know all the staff and all the students. Teachers keep an eye on all the students; not just those in their class.
What do you plan on doing over the summer?
This summer my husband & I are planning to travel to Beijing and Tokyo for our 25th wedding anniversary. Our anniversary is really in November but as a teacher, I have to take vacation when I can!
