Where are you from? Where did you study?
I grew up in the small town of Matthews, NC. (Yes, Matthews was once a small town!) I obtained my Bachelors of Arts Degree in Psychology and Elementary Education from UNC-Asheville in 1998. This past February I earned my Masters in Education – Curriculum Instruction – Integrating Through the Arts from Lesley University.
Have you always wanted to teach?
I have wanted to teach since I was a little girl. You might say that I was inspired by my mother who was also an educator. I have fond memories of playing “school” with my friends and teddy bears.
How would you like to be described by your students?
I hope that my students would describe me as the individual that encouraged them to reach beyond their dreams and to realize that their opinions mattered in our world. That in the classroom I was creative, caring, and passionate.
How do you individualize your teaching?
Based on student interest and performance during classroom activities helps to direct how to meet the needs of all of my students. When possible I integrate the arts in all areas of study and provide global connections.
What do you like best about Harrisburg Elementary?
Being a teacher at Harrisburg Elementary is like being a part of a large extended family. Everyone works collaboratively and supports each other. Our family consists of not only the staff but our students and their parents too.
What do you plan on doing over the summer?
This summer will be filled with camping and biking in the mountains, visiting family from North Carolina to New Jersey, and catching up on personal art projects.
And last but not least...
What are your favorite ways to “de-stress”?
I enjoy going for bike rides with my family on the greenway trails, doing crafts with my daughters, gardening, and meditating.
