Where are you from? Where did you study?
Born and raised in Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Graduated from The Ohio State University in 1984 with a B.S. in Architecture. Moved to Charlotte in 1985 to escape northeastern Ohio winters and find work in a rapidly growing city. Spent the next 25 years in the Architecture and Construction industries in Charlotte and Concord, moving to Cabarrus County in 1993.
Have you always wanted to teach?
No, but I have always enjoyed teaching, be it through coaching athletics or leading Sunday School classes. I began to think about teaching when I was made aware of the Lateral Entry program while participating in the 2001 Cabarrus Leadership Program.
What personal strengths do you find especially helpful in your teaching?
My knowledge of my subject matter. My ability to control my classroom while maintaining a cooperative and fun learning environment. My ability to create interesting, hands-on lessons.
What do you think is the greatest challenge facing students today?
Technology. It is too easy to find an answer without understanding the answer.
What do you like best about Hickory Ridge High?
What do you plan on doing over the summer?
Teach a week of robotics camp at Hickory Ridge Middle School. Attend CTE Summer Conference. Review some Drafting Honors Portfolios for the State. Fix up and sell a rental house. Complete my honeydo list from LAST summer. Spend some time in the Mountains. Get our boat in the water for the first time. Oh, and do some residential design work. Too much?
And last but not least...
What are the top three musical genres/radio stations programmed in your car, on your Pandora playlist, etc.?
I have 2 main Pandora stations that I play in my class: Cary’s Cold Keys (Cold Play, Black Keys, Dave Matthews, Florence & the Machine, etc), and my Moby station (Moby, Beck, Kraftwork, and other technorockish artists). They are stations that I am constantly tweaking. But I also have a Classical station, a Frank Sinatra station, and, of course, a Celtic station. Oh, and sometimes I play Tibetin Monk Chanting.
